Detailed information

OUR LONGWOOL SHEEPSKIN IS AMONG THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SHEEPSKIN IN THE WORLD!

Ideal for decorative purposes, our longwool sheepskin is sought after from all over the world! Our skins combine excellent insulation with a uniquely wild and primitive appearance. Whether you want to warm your heart or your senses, decorative Icelandic longwool lambskins are ideal for comfort: in the baby’s crib, in a beautifully designed chair, or on the cold floor. A longwool lambskin on the floor or strapped on a wall adds the finishing touch to a gorgeously designed home.

OUR LONGWOOL SHEEPSKIN – WILD AND COSY

The coat of the Icelandic sheep consists of two layers: the outer layer or tog consists of very long, relatively coarse fibres, 15 to 25 cm in length. The inner layer or þel consists of a warm coat of short, fine, soft fibres. The combination of these two types of wool gives the Icelandic longwool lambskin its unique character.

THE ICELANDIC SHEEP – A HARDY BREED

The Icelandic sheep is a hardy breed, which wanders free in the Icelandic mountain pastures during the summer. The unusually long-haired coat has gradually evolved over the centuries, as the sheep have adapted to Iceland’s harsh climate. The long outer hairs repel water, while the short inner hairs keep the sheep warm.

FIVE NATURAL COLOURS

Rugs of Icelandic longwool lambskin are available in five natural colours: brown, grey, black and white plus dappled lambskins with diverse combinations of black and white. Of course, no two dappled skins are alike.

NATURAL COLOURS

As white wool is best for dyeing, in most sheep populations the natural variations in colour have been eliminated by selective breeding. In Iceland, on the other hand, the most important attributes of the sheep are that it is hardy and produces plenty of meat, and so the natural colours have survived. Through the tanning process, we strive to use no artificial colours, so all the colours in our longwool sheepskin are natural.
