Tours through the factory

Scheduled tours are through the factory at 10 am and 2 pm every day.

The Fish Leather

The fish leather tanned at the tannery – Atlantic leather – is known for its innovative, eco-friendly and strong fish leather. Atlantic leather is the only tannery in the world that uses vegetable tanning for its fish leather resulting in the high-quality gorgeous Mimosa collection!

About Tannery Visitor Centre

The Tannery Visitor Centre in Sauðárkrókur is Iceland’s only working tannery. At the Centre, visitors have access to the tannery and it’s leather products, in an unusually direct manner. The tannery does not offer a conventional presentation, but a guided tour of the tannery itself. Visitors can observe the entire tannery process from start to finish, and see for themselves how fishskin is processed to make high-quality leather for use in design, crafts and manufacturing.

Seminars and guided tours

Seminars

We offer seminars in the workshops with or without tutoring. Seminars vary from one to four days.

The seminars are organized with the needs of each and every individual group in mind, but below you can find basic information for one day at the workshop with tutoring and one luxury day with tutoring.

Guided Tours

Tannery Visitor Centre offers guided tours around the tannery, where you can observe the whole tannery process and have a guide tell them about how fishskin is processed to make high-quality leather for use in design and crafts.

Leather goods for sale

On sale at the Tannery Visitor Centre are leather goods from a variety of designers and craftspeople. All the products and craft goods are made from leather produced in this tannery. You can also buy leather and skins direct from the tannery, for instance, fish leather, decorative longhair lambskins, leaather and more.

Just browsing through the shop of this one of two in the world Fish tannery is interesting. They also have some information plates about the process of tanning. We didn’t do a tour, so cannot vouch for that.

A must when you go to Sauðárkrókur

Really interesting place to visit. If you like handcraft or even do some on your own you have to visit this place.

Exceptional Place to Visit!!

With everything else to see in Iceland, this was the one place I was really looking forward to visiting – and I wasn’t disappointed. We were able to have a tour that was given by Afore and the cost was about ISK 500 each – very reasonable for a guided tour. Understanding the Tannery process was very interesting and informative. We also saw many of the workers – all of whom had a smile on their face and appeared to enjoy their jobs. Also the best “souvenir” I had from my trip – again at reasonable prices.
